What SpeakPass is
An AI examiner that runs Trinity GESE Grade 7 and Grade 5 speaking practice as a live spoken conversation, then writes a report with a Trinity-style phase grade (A to D) broken into the four areas Trinity's descriptors cover: communicative effectiveness, grammar, lexis and phonology. The report lists the Grade 7 (or Grade 5) items the student produced, quoting their words, the items the examiner invited and the student missed, up to six corrected errors, and vocabulary upgrades. It is built by Avlas Digital, an independent Irish sole trader; we are not connected to Trinity College London or the Home Office.
The free version is live now: a four-minute Conversation-phase practice on one of the six subject areas, two a day per device, no account. The full 15-minute mock with the student's own Topic Form and the Interactive phase opens in January 2027.
What it is for
The hour you have with a student is better spent on things only you can do: choosing a topic, correcting pronunciation, explaining why a sentence is wrong. The ten hours of talking practice a B1 student needs between lessons to become a B2 speaker cannot come from you. SpeakPass gives them an examiner at 11 pm who asks "What would you do if…" and tells them afterwards that they never once used would.
How teachers use the free practice
- Diagnostic in week one. Each student does one practice on each of the six subjects over a week and brings the reports. You see the class's shared gaps (usually: no used to, no questions back, no repair) before planning.
- Homework with evidence. "Do Pollution and recycling tonight and bring the report." The transcript shows you what they said, not what they say they said.
- Teaching the format. The Grade 7 pages are written for students at B1 reading level and can be set as reading.
- The Interactive phase in class. The free practice does not run it yet; the prompts and phrases page is designed for pair work.
What we would like from you
We are building the paid version from what teachers and students tell us. If you teach ESOL for settlement or citizenship, run a SELT preparation course, or advise clients on the B2 change, write to hello@speakpass.co.uk. We will give you free access to the full mocks for your class when they open, in exchange for honest feedback on the reports. Tell us which exam, how many students, and what the reports get wrong.
Accuracy and limits
The examiner is a speech model with Trinity's published syllabus as its instructions. It is good at asking the right questions and keeping a conversation going; its grades are an estimate, consistently a little stricter than a real examiner on grammar and a little kinder on phonology, because it cannot hear everything a human hears. We say that to students too. No student should book or skip a real test on our grade alone.
Data
Audio is streamed to the model and transcribed; it is not stored. The transcript and report are stored to show the student and, if they leave an email, to attach to their account. We do not sell data and we do not advertise to students. The privacy page has the details.
